Houses around here are older than folks tend to assume. A lot of Slatersville and Union Village property goes back generations, with driveways paved thin, straight over dirt, decades ago. The same short list of problems shows up over and over.

Both village centers sit inside historic districts, and that changes how a driveway job gets approached. Stone walls run right up to the pavement edge, drives are narrow and often steep, and the original grading was cut for carriages, not for a two-car household.

Ground has to be warm for hot mix to compact the way it should. Mid-April through late October is your window in this part of the state, and most regional plants shut down by early to mid-November.
Lay asphalt during a cold snap and you’ll watch the surface ravel apart come the next thaw. Spring and summer slots in North Smithfield fill fast, so the earlier you get on the calendar, the more choice you have.
Sloped lots and ledge are everywhere in this town, and it gets worse up around Iron Mine Hill. Water sits on asphalt, freezes, swells, and pries the whole surface open.
So we set the slope first. Pave second. On a regrade we make sure runoff heads toward the road, not toward your foundation. Worth checking your downspouts too, since gutters dumping onto blacktop hollow out a base faster than anything else.
Repaving what’s already there usually needs no permit. Touching the apron, widening the drive, or cutting in new curb access is a different story, and approval depends on who owns the road in front of your house.

Fresh hot mix needs time before it takes weight. Rushing it is the fastest way to end up with scuffs and depressions you’ll look at for years.
