Village driveways take a beating that suburban ones don’t. Plow blades work these streets hard all winter because the lots sit right on top of the road. Salt runs off the pavement straight onto your apron. And when the thaw comes, the damage shows up first at the street edge where the driveway meets Main Street.
Most of that damage starts underneath. Water finds a hairline crack, freezes overnight, and pushes the asphalt up from below. By spring the crack you ignored in November is a pothole.

Blackstone Village grew up around the mills and the rail junction, and the housing stock reflects it. The worker tenements along St. Paul Street went up on narrow lots with driveways to match. Short single-car strips. Property lines close enough that a careless crew clips a neighbor’s fence getting in.
That is the job we’re built for. Our equipment goes where a highway paver can’t, and anywhere a machine genuinely can’t reach, the crew hand-works it.
The other village-specific issue is the apron. With houses set close to the road, your driveway meets public pavement almost immediately, which means apron condition drives the whole project more often than it would out in the country.
The old surface comes off first. We look hard at the subgrade, rebuild with processed gravel, then place hot mix in lifts and roll it while it’s still hot enough to compact. Any digging is part of building the driveway, not something we sell separately.
Solid base with surface-only damage means an overlay saves you real money. When the gravel below has washed out, paving over it just delays the bill. You’ll know which one you’re looking at before we hand you a number.
Village properties blow out at the street apron more than anywhere else. We saw back to clean square edges, tack the seams, then compact the patch so it isn’t sinking again by February.

Homeowners tend to judge a driveway by how the top looks. The people who repair pavement for a living judge it by what’s underneath.
A British surfacing contractor made exactly this point in recent Guardian reporting on failing roads: most defects begin below the surface, and if the sub-base is right, the top layer will be too. He also noted that turning areas fail first, because every turn pulls stone out of the surface. That’s public road maintenance in another country, but the physics are the same on a driveway, and it’s why we won’t quote an overlay over a base that’s already gone.
It’s also why we ask you not to crank the wheel in one spot on fresh asphalt for the first month.
Repaving what’s already there usually needs no permit. Apron work, widening, or a new curb cut depends on the road in front of your house, and in the village that distinction matters more than usual.
Mid-April through late October is the window here. Most regional asphalt plants shut down by early to mid-November, and paving during a cold snap means the cure suffers and the surface ravels at the next thaw.
